Profile
Julia Gurol is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Chair for International Relations (Prof. Dr. Sandra Destradi) since October 2020. Previously she has worked as a research associate and lecturer at the Chair for Multilevel Governance (2017-2020). In her PhD thesis, which was supervised by Prof. Dr. Diana Panke and Prof. em. Dr. Jürgen Rüland, she analysed EU-China security relations in the context of global tensions.
Besides working for the Chair, Julia Gurol is an associated fellow and policy advisor on China's role in the Middle East and Chinese security policy towards the region at the Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient (CARPO) in Bonn. Before, she has worked a.o. for the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) in a project on arms export control.
Her research interests are China's international relations and political economy, foreign and security policy, transregional authoritarian practices, international security and the politics of infrastructure and connectivity, with a regional focus on China and the Global South.
