Akademischer Lebenslauf

Stefan Rother ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut sowie am Seminar für Wissenschaftliche Politik, Lehrstuhl für Internationale Beziehungen, der Universität Freiburg. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind transnationale Migration, global governance, soziale Bewegungen, Demokratisierung und nicht-/post--westliche Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen. Seine Dissertation „Diffusion in transnational political spaces: Political activism of Philippine labor migrants in Hong Kong" wurde mit dem Arnold-Bergstraesser-Preis für Internationale Politik ausgezeichnet.

Rother hat umfassende Feldforschung in Südostasien durchgeführt und an zahlreichen globalen Prozessen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Parallel- oder Gegenveranstaltungen teilgenommen (u.a. Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen, Internationale Arbeitsorganisation ILO, ASEAN,  WTO, Global Forum on Migration and Development GFMD, Weltsozialforum für Migration). Er hat zahlreiche Beiträge in Büchern und wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften veröffentlicht, darunter Third World Quarterly, Cooperation and Conflict, European Journal of East Asian Studies, International Migration, Migration Studies und Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft (ZPol). Er ist Mitherausgeber der Reihe “Studien zur Migrations- und Integrationspolitik” bei SpringerVS und betreibt ein Blog zu Migrantenrechten und Entwicklung (www.gfmd-blog.com).

Seien jüngsten Buchveröffentlichungen sind „Migration und Demokratie“ (Sammelband, Springer VS 2016“) und „Democratization through Migration? Political Remittances and Participation of Philippine Return Migrants” (mit Christl Kessler, Lexongton Books 2016).

Stefan Rother ist Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Asienkunde (DGA) und Sprecher des AK Migrationspolitik in der Deutschen Vereinigung für Politikwissenschaft (DVPW).
