Prof. Dr. Gerlinde Groitl

Biography

Prof. Dr. Gerlinde Groitl currently serves as Interim Chair for Multi-Level Governance at the University of Freiburg. Previous appointments include Interim Chair for Political Science with a focus on Comparative Government at the University of Passau and Associate Professor of International Politics and Transatlantic Relations at the University of Regensburg, where she is currently on leave. Visiting fellowships have led her, among others, to the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC, the university think tank LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Masaryk University in Brno in previous years.

Her research focuses on matters of security and strategy with a special focus on the US, Germany, the EU and NATO as well as the geopolitical, geoeconomic and normative great power competition between Russia, China and the West in a changing global order. She publishes widely on these themes. Her research is grounded in realist theory, emphasizing the explanatory value of international anarchy, conflicting national interests and power struggles in world affairs. The last of her to-date three monographs developed a neoclassical realist model of order contestation and analyzed Russia’s and China’s revisionist assault on the US-led international order (2023). Her research was acknowledged with multiple awards. Most recently, she together with Prof. Dr. Eva Odzuck (Political Theory, University of Regensburg) was awarded the 2023 essay prize of the University of Augsburg’s Jakob Fugger Center for Advanced Studies for their joint work on democracy and violence.

Groitl is engaged in various projects and collaborative formats. She co-leads the research module on transatlantic political transformations within the Regensburg-based Leibniz-Science Campus “Europe and America in the Modern World”, a multi-year interdisciplinary research initiative to explore transatlantic entanglements and the frictions of globalization. Committed to policy-relevant scholarship and cross-professional exchange, she regularly contributes to conferences and collaborative projects at the intersection of academia, the think tank and policy worlds. In 2020/21 she participated in an expert group project at the German think tank Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin to analyze long-term political developments in the US. In 2018 she was a visiting fellow to the “American-German Situation Room” project of the German Marshall Fund and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington, DC. She is also, among others, an alumna of the “Young Leaders in Security Policy” program of the Federal Academy for Security Policy, Berlin.
