Vita

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Rüland (geb. 1953) studierte Politikwissenschaft, Geschichte und Germanistik an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Dort wurde er 1981 promoviert und 1989 habilitiert. Von 1978-1991 war er als wissenschaftlicher Referent am Arnold-Bergstraesser Institut in Freiburg tätig. Nach einer zweijährigen Lehrstuhlvertretung im Fach Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Passau folgte 1993 eine Lehrstuhlvertretung an der Universität Rostock. 1994 wurde Prof. Rüland auf einen Lehrstuhl für Internationale Politik und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit an die Universität Rostock berufen. 1998 nahm er einen Ruf an das Seminar für wissenschaftliche Politik der Universität Freiburg an. Von 2000 bis 2002 war Prof. Rüland Dekan der Philosophischen Fakultät IV und von 2001-2007 Direktor des Freiburger Arnold-Bergstraesser-Instituts.

Prof. Rüland lehrte und forschte über sieben Jahre an verschiedenen südostasiatischen Universitäten, so u.a. an der University of the Philippines in Manila, der University of the Philippines in the Visayas in Iloilo City, der Chiang Mai University, am Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, der Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, der Universitas Indonesia und der National University of Singapore. 1999 wurde er zum External Examiner an der University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur ernannt, 2009 zum Adjunct Professor an der Universitas Indonesia. 2001 lehrte er im Rahmen einer DAAD-Kurzzeitdozentur am Centre for Research on Europe der University of Canterbury, Christchurch, Neuseeland. 2010 war er Fellow am Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) der Stanford University. Von 1995–2003 war Prof. Rüland Sprecher des wissenschaftlichen Beirates Südostasien der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Asienkunde und von 2006 - 2014 Vorsitzender des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats des German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) Hamburg. Darüber hinaus war er Vorstandsmitglied in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Politikwissenschaft (DGfP) (2009 - 2013). Er ist Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Beirates der Zeitschriften The Pacific Review, European Journal of East Asian Affairs (EJEAS), des Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, Asia-Europe Journal und der Zeitschrift für Internationale Politik (ZIB).

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Kooperation und Institutionen in den internationalen Beziehungen, Globalisierung und Regionalisierung, Internationale Politik im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum, Demokratisierung sowie der politische, sozio-ökonomische und kulturelle Wandel in Südostasien. Prof. Rüland ist Autor oder Ko-Autor von 15 Bücher und Broschüren und Herausgeber oder Mitherausgeber von 21 Sammelbänden. Er publizierte u.a. in Zeitschriften wie Asian Survey, The Pacific Review, Pacific Affairs, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Security Dialogue, Public Administration and Development, European Journal of East Asian Studies, Asia-Europe Journal, Contemporary Southeast Asia, European Journal of International Relations, Journal of European Public Policy, Foreign Policy Analysis, Journal of International Relations and Development, Asian Journal of Public Administration, Zeitschrift für Internationale Beziehungen, Politische Vierteljahresschrift, Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft und Zeitschrift für Politik. 2007 erhielt er zusammen mit Christl Kessler den William L. Holland Preis der Zeitschrift Pacific Affairs für den besten Artikel des Jahres 2006. Die Universität Stanford und die National University of Singapore vergaben an ihn die Lee Kong Chian Distinguished Scholarship for Southeast Asia 2009/2010. Für 2010/2011 und 2014/2015 erhielt Rüland eine Fellowship des Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS).
